Republican Party Virtues

The following is a collection of actual and / or perceived causes, qualities, and alignments typically associated with the modern Republican Party. The showcase may include actual core party values as well as perceptions (whether true or not) and official / unofficial stances of the party itself. This showcase includes all topics - both good and bad - as viewed by party insiders, party outsiders, and data revealed through surveys and polling.

The party has been the originator of several controversial / unconstitutional initiatives:

Suspension of Writ of Habeas Corpus (1861)
Abraham Lincoln's (R) administration suspended the writ of Habeas Corpus during the American Civil War (1861-1865), allowing the federal government to indefinitely hold an individual (including American citizens) without cause, arraignment, or indictment. The initiative was established to silence rebels as well as dissenters of the war. Defending the move as necessary, Lincoln cited Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution which allowed suspension 'when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.'

Patriot Act (2001)
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the Geroge W. Bush (R) administration enacted the Patriot Act on October 26th of that year. The Act looked to expand law enforcement abilities of surveillance on both American citizens and foreigners, both statside and globally, and moved to broaden the list of actions that could be perceived by the Federal government as terrorism. The vaguely-worded role of the Act was stated as such: 'to deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other purposes' - note the abuiguity of the last phrase of what could be defined as a 'terrorist act' and who could be charged as a 'terrorist', opening the door to potential abuse of the Act particularly against dissenters (including American citizens) of the 'War on Terror' effort and other Federal initiatives / actions since.
